Darlene Mae Harvatine

Harv's mom passed away last week after a 4 year battle with ALS.  She was an avid crafter and did her time with just about every craft imaginable, from decoupage to knitting.  For the last decade and a half one of her main passions was quilting.

As Dar's ALS progressed she lost the ability to use her hands, arms and legs but she kept sewing as long as she possibly could.  With the help of some very good friends and whichever family member she could get to wield the rotary cutter, she persisted.  One of the last quilts she finished was for our baby.

We are lucky to have known her and to have plenty of her handiwork around to remember her by.

  6. Being left behind is never fun. I'm inspired by the legacy crafting can leave for others. I have faith and confidence that you will see her again. And how blessed you are to surround yourself in the things that remind you of her.
I hope the best for your family during your loss.

so sorry to learn of your loss. i agree with rilojane, above - that you all will be reunited some day (and for all those wonderful, joyous reunions, i praise and thank God)! in the meantime, may you, your husband and the rest of your family be surrounded by friends with casseroles and hugs and also be comforted by happy memories and those quilts made by your mother-in-law.

  11. my thoughts are with you and Harv! it will mean a lot to your daughter as she grows to have that quilt. my children all have something from my mother and they hold on to it like it's gold....even Izzy who never had the opportunity to meet my mom.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is difficult to watch someone you love suffer through such a devastating illness.
